<p>This post is a little strange. I usually don&#8217;t do anything with audio, but I decided to give GarageBand a shot. For this experiment, I covered the title theme of one of my favorite shows: Fringe. If you&#8217;ve ever seen the opening to the show, you should be able to recognize the tune. First, I just did a standard recreation of the theme. Then, I had some fun with a retro, synthesized variation. Enjoy.</p>

Our&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ngumasscomm.org">current</a>&nbsp;site was made 4 years ago and hasn&#8217;t been updated much since. It&#8217;s my job as Department Webmaster this year to design, develop, and maintain a new website. Here are my goals:</div>
<p />
<div>&nbsp;- Integrate WordPress as a <b>Content Management System</b> (CMS)</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Offer <b>relevant, updated information</b> for prospective students, current students, and alumni</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Optimize viewing for Smart Phones and <b>mobile devices</b> (including the iPad)</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Showcase actual <b>student media</b> and work</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Feature <b>updated photos</b> of faculty, facilities, and students</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Offer more <b>employment/internship</b> opportunities</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Increase traffic through <b>Search Engine Optimization</b> (SEO)</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Increase interactivity through <b>Social Media Optimization</b> (SMO)</div>
<p />
<div>Through doing the above, I believe the new website will increase in audience and audience loyalty, meaning an increase first-time visitors and an increase in returning visitors. Who wouldn&#8217;t want that?</div>
<p />
<div>The current launch date is set for <b>January 7th, 2011</b>.&nbsp;</div>

<h2 style="">Design = Communication</h2>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">At it’s core, design is all about visual communication: To be an effective designer, you have to be able to clearly communicate your ideas to viewers or else lose their attention. People are fickle though; if you give them a massive block of information, chances are that 99 out of 100 people won’t bother to read it. Why? Because most people are inherently visual thinkers, not data processors.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">To figure out why this is true, it’s important to understand a little bit about the way that we see things. People aren’t what you would call “equal opportunity see-ers”. Rather than taking in visual information and processing it evenly, people organize what they see in terms of “visual relationships”. Let us consider the following image of two ordinary circles:</div>
<div class="tutorial_image" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 20px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-right-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);"><img title="visual hierarchy in web design" src="http://d3pr5r64n04s3o.cloudfront.net/006_Hierarchy/1.jpg" alt="visual hierarchy in web design" style="margin-top: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-right-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-bottom-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-left-color: rgb(137, 137, 137);" /></div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Chances are, you don’t see “two circles”; Instead, you saw “one black circle and one smaller red circle”.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">The reason is pretty simple: When presented with something as simple as two circles, a person won’t just see two ordinary circles, they will find a way to&nbsp;<em style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">differentiate&nbsp;</em>between the two. One circle might be bigger, or smaller, or colored, or any other variety of differences. These differences allow us to distinguish between objects and give them unique meanings.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Let’s now look at a more complex image:</div>
<div class="tutorial_image" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 20px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-right-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);"><img title="visual hierarchy in web design" src="http://d3pr5r64n04s3o.cloudfront.net/006_Hierarchy/3.jpg" alt="visual hierarchy in web design" style="margin-top: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-right-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-bottom-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-left-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); display: inline;" /></div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">The added complexity actually re-enforces our desire to “classify” the objects in terms of relationships. Similarities and differences become the frame that we view the shapes through. Differences in scale suggest that one object is closer to us than another or that one is more dominant than the other; Variations in color might suggest that one object holds a unique personality that sets it apart from the other object. A lot of information can be delivered in just a single image by using some very rudimentary tools.</div>
<blockquote style="margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 18px; font-family: Myriad Pro, Verdana, sans-serif; vertical-align: baseline; border-top-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(223, 223, 223); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: rgb(223, 223, 223); display: block; clear: both; color: rgb(65, 65, 65); line-height: 23px; background-image: ; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-position: 1% 15%;"><div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 10px; padding-right: 40px; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 40px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 18px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: ; background-color: transparent; background-position: 99% 85%;">…Understanding that people will see our designs in terms of relationships is crucial to becoming a more effective designer.</div>
</blockquote>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Let’s take this example back to web design; Because web design is all about communicating visual information, understanding that people will see our designs in terms of relationships is crucial to becoming a more effective designer. While it might seem like it’s enough to just dish out information, as web designers, our task is to break down that raw information into delicious little chunks of visually relevant information that are easy on the eyes, and more importantly, effective at communicating the message behind a webpage.</div>
<hr style="display: block; height: 1px; background-color: rgb(223, 223, 223); margin-top: 30px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-color: initial; clear: both;" />
<h2 style="">The Dawn of Hierarchy</h2>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">There are a hundred explanations for why people see in terms of relationships; If you were to trace it back anthropologically, you might conclude that a hunter-gatherer mentality forced humans at one point to recognize that seeing relationships is a survival skill.</div>
<div class="tutorial_image" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 20px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-right-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);"><img title="visual hierarchy in web design" src="http://d3pr5r64n04s3o.cloudfront.net/006_Hierarchy/4.jpg" alt="visual hierarchy in web design" style="margin-top: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-right-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-bottom-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-left-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); display: inline;" /><br />See, even prehistoric man had a healthy respect for visual contrast.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Perhaps a more practical explanation is that it’s simply the way that our brains categorize information: grouping similar visual elements and organizing it into meaningful patterns is as inherent to our human nature as eating or drinking. Either way, the fact is that even in it’s most basic form, information that is organized with a hierarchy in mind will always be more effective at communicating than unorganized information.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Consider the following image of two text blocks:</div>
<div class="tutorial_image" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 20px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-right-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);"><img title="visual hierarchy in web design" src="http://d3pr5r64n04s3o.cloudfront.net/006_Hierarchy/2.jpg" alt="visual hierarchy in web design" style="margin-top: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-right-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-bottom-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-left-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); display: inline;" /></div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">In the example above, we see the most rudimentary form of a visual hierarchy system applied to text. The information in each of the two examples isn’t any different, but how it’s been broken up dramatically changes the way that reader’s will see it and take it in. When we talk about visual hierarchy in terms of typography, this is what we mean. The proximity, scale, and similarity of the text formatting allows a reader to organize the lower example into titles and paragrahs. The hierarchy gives the titles more meaning than the other information, and makes it easier to scan.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Alright, so this is all pretty basic stuff, right? Let’s take a dive into some deeper examples of how you can apply this very&nbsp;<em style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">basic</em>&nbsp;principle to some very&nbsp;<em style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">sophisticated</em>&nbsp;designs:</div>
<hr style="display: block; height: 1px; background-color: rgb(223, 223, 223); margin-top: 30px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-color: initial; clear: both;" />
<h2 style="">The Hierarchists Toolbox</h2>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Understanding that visual hierarchy is important is all fine and well, but how does a designer actually create it? The “tools” that we’ll look at are as simple as a carpenter’s toolset – hammer, nail, saw, etc – It’s what you do with them is what counts!</div>
<h3 style="">Size</h3>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Objects that are bigger demand more attention. Using size as a hierarchal tool is an effective way of guiding a viewer’s eye to a particular portion of the page. Because size is one of the most powerful forms of organization, it’s important to correlate&nbsp;<em style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">size&nbsp;</em>with&nbsp;<em style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">importance&nbsp;</em>in a design. The biggest elements should be the most important in most cases; the smallest elements should be the least important.</div>
<div class="tutorial_image" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 20px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-right-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);"><a href="http://getactive.sj-stmk.org/" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(29, 116, 90); text-decoration: underline;"><img title="visual hierarchy in web design" src="http://d3pr5r64n04s3o.cloudfront.net/006_Hierarchy/5.jpg" alt="visual hierarchy in web design" style="margin-top: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-right-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-bottom-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-left-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); display: inline;" /></a><br />The use of BIG, bold type adds a level of order to this otherwise chaotic design. The eye should naturally move from big elements down to the smaller elements.</div>
<hr style="display: block; height: 1px; background-color: rgb(223, 223, 223); margin-top: 30px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-color: initial; clear: both;" />
<h3 style="">Color</h3>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Color is an interesting tool because it can function as both an organizational tool as well as a personality tool. Bold, contrasting colors on a particular element of a website will demand attention (such as with buttons or error messages or hyperlinks). When used as a&nbsp;<em style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">personality&nbsp;</em>tool, color can extend beyond into more sophisticated types of hierarchy; Using lush, comforting colors can bring an emotional appeal to a page. Color can affect everything from a websites brand (ie: CocaCola Red) to symbolism (ie: cool, subdued colors). Advanced applications of color can even be used to “classify” information within a hierarchy, as in the following example:</div>
<div class="tutorial_image" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 20px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-right-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);"><a href="http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/components/spectra/index.html" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(29, 116, 90); text-decoration: underline;"><img title="visual hierarchy in web design" src="http://d3pr5r64n04s3o.cloudfront.net/006_Hierarchy/6.jpg" alt="visual hierarchy in web design" style="margin-top: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-right-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-bottom-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-left-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); display: inline;" /></a><br />The Spectra Viewer site uses colors to represent different news categories, so it’s easy to find a particular type of information based on the color key.</div>
<hr style="display: block; height: 1px; background-color: rgb(223, 223, 223); margin-top: 30px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-color: initial; clear: both;" />
<h3 style="">Contrast</h3>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Contrast shows relative important. Dramatic shifts in text-size or color will impart a message that something is different and requires attention. Changing from a light background color to a dark background color can quickly separate the core content of a page from the footer.</div>
<div class="tutorial_image" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 20px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-right-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);"><a href="http://www.arvorecer.com.br/" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(29, 116, 90); text-decoration: underline;"><img title="visual hierarchy in web design" src="http://d3pr5r64n04s3o.cloudfront.net/006_Hierarchy/7.jpg" alt="visual hierarchy in web design" style="margin-top: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-right-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-bottom-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-left-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); display: inline;" /></a><br />The contrast between the light, airy header section and dark, earthy footer creates a distinct hierarchy of information.</div>
<hr style="display: block; height: 1px; background-color: rgb(223, 223, 223); margin-top: 30px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-color: initial; clear: both;" />
<h3 style="">Alignment</h3>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">Alignment creates order between elements. It can be as simple as the difference between a “content column” and a “sidebar column”, but alignment can also take on more complex hierarchical roles. Consider, for instance, the power of information placed in the top-right of a web page. Because users general expect information in that part of the screen to be associated with profiles, accounts, shopping carts, etc., it gives everything places in that area a sense of the “official”. Alignment can also provoke interest if used in unique ways, such as in the following examples:</div>
<div class="tutorial_image" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 20px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-right-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221);"><a href="http://themeforest.net/item/stuff-template/full_screen_preview/127580" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(29, 116, 90); text-decoration: underline;"><img title="visual hierarchy in web design" src="http://d3pr5r64n04s3o.cloudfront.net/006_Hierarchy/8.jpg" alt="visual hierarchy in web design" style="margin-top: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: auto; margin-left: auto; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 11px; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: rgb(244, 244, 244); border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-right-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-bottom-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); border-left-color: rgb(137, 137, 137); display: inline;" /></a><br />The Stuff Template uses a unique horizontal alignment system to separate brand and navigation from blog post content.</div>

<div>After receiving some much needed feedback, I have revised my new website concept (here is my&nbsp;<a href="http://bfa.posterous.com/new-personal-website-concept-feedback-needed">original</a>). Here are some of the changes I made:</div>
<p />
<div>&nbsp;- Made the purples bolder and darker; effort to make it look less &#8220;feminine&#8221;</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Added texture to the quote box to provide emphasis</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Changed the color of my shirt to provide emphasis</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Minimized italics w/i content section; enlarging the font-size to make t feel less cramped</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Strengthened the footer by making it more concise and balanced</div>
<div>&nbsp;- Changed stay-connected links to buttons rather than text</div>

I was surfing the web today when I came across some eye-catcthing faux-vitage advertisements&#160;for modern services such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Skype. These ads are brilliantly done by agency Moma Sao Paulo&#160;for a series of seminars by Brazilian communication company called&#160;Maximidia. Beautiful artwork.

The ads are available for download in high resolution at&#160;maximidiavintageads.com.

<p />The last time I revamped my personal website was over a year ago. I decided it was time for a fresh look. I&#8217;ve been working steadily on this project all weekend. I included in the design lot of trending ideas within recent web design. You might notice a few.
<p />
<div>Additionally, I wanted to make some changes to how I brand my business. I still want to incorporate my current logo; however, i needed a more fitting slogan. So, I cam up with this: <i>Elegant design. Functional Development. </i>I think it suits me. I love to design, and I am fantastic at it (so i hear); but I also enjoy coding, developing, and it is imperative to do so efficiently. It also led me to changing my title from just <i>web designer</i> to <i>web designeloper</i>. I do both: I design <i>and</i> develop websites. &nbsp;&nbsp;
<p />
<div>Feedback is most certainly needed. Love it? Hate it? Not sitting well with you? Tell me!</div>

But if you want grow as a designer, why not learn how to use other programs as well? There’s such a wide range of various design software available for designers such as illustrator, inkscape, gimp etc.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 11px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.7em;">Broadening your horizons in terms of what software your capable of using will make you a better designer. <div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 11px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.7em;">As a designer you can never stop learning. There are always some tips, tricks and techniques which you can add to you repertoire, but how do you learn theses new skills? There are a ton of blogs which offer step by step tutorials on how to create specific designs. Even if you attempt to follow a tutorial and don’t complete it along the way, you&#8217;ll be sure to learn something new which is the beauty of doing tutorials. And the techniques which you have picked up from the tutorials later on can be implemented into your own designs.</div>

Thus, it is important to set up an RSS account to subscribe to your favourite blogs. Reading content on design blogs keeps you up-to-date with the latest design trends, in loop of what’s hot and what’s not. Reading online content is great, but, also, choose to read books. Usually web articles only tend to scratch the surface on a particular topic whereas a book can be a lot more in-depth on a specific topic.</div>
<h2 class="fullHdr4" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 15px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 2.2em; font-weight: normal; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(76, 76, 76);"></h2>

Take a blank canvas, and cook up ideas which are a little more outside of the box. This gives you the chance to play around and put into practice techniques which you have learned from tutorials. The best thing is, you aren&#8217;t pressured into a deadline or multiple revisions for some annoying client who&#8217;s been on you for the past 3 days.</div>
<h2 class="fullHdr4" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 15px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 2.2em; font-weight: normal; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(76, 76, 76);"></h2>
<h2 class="fullHdr4" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 15px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 2.2em; font-weight: normal; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(76, 76, 76);">Build an arsenal of resources and inspiration</h2>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 11px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.7em;">Building an arsenal of design inspiration involves saving images into a folder which you might stumble across when searching the web. This arsenal could include creative design resources for future reference, or alternatively bookmark your personal favorite sites which offer creative design inspiration. A lot of designers sometimes get to point when they get a designers block, which is when a designer struggles to come up with new ideas for the direction they want to take their design. If you have built up an arsenal full of creative inspiration this can be &nbsp;helpful in getting your creative flare going and generating some fresh idea’s to be used within your own designs you’re currently working on.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 11px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.7em;">It is also good to collect fonts, brushes, textures, and other snippets that can easily be incorporated into your daily designs. This makes the design process much quicker when you have an arsenal you can always refer back to.</div>
<h2 class="fullHdr4" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 15px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 2.2em; font-weight: normal; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(76, 76, 76);"></h2>

<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 11px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.7em;">Becoming a master designer is a never-ending process. So, use these tips to your advantage.&nbsp;</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 11px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.7em;">What tips might you have? Feedback is always appreciated.</div>

These projects are usually the most fun. But, I will warn you, they may get a little weird. That&#8217;s ok though. It&#8217;s the playground.
<p />
<div>After playing around with some new found textures and effects, I came up with something that I really liked.&nbsp;I just used a fictional logo I made up&#8211;in this case the subject is Media Lab. I really liked how this one turned out. It&#8217;s currently my wallpaper on my desktop.
<p />
<div>I subscribe to a lot of blogs in my google reader that give away free design resources (e.g. textures, brushes, fonts, etc.).&nbsp;There are literally thousands of great sites out there. Here are just a few that I follow:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bittbox.com/">BittBox</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://lostandtaken.com/">Lost and Taken</a>&nbsp;(Caleb Kimbrough),&nbsp;<a href="http://colorburned.com/">Colorburned</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/">Smashing Magazine</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.line25.com">Line25</a>.</div>

I thoroughly enjoy these ventures even though they furnish no monetary reward. I&#8217;m just as satisfied in the end, when I can say with a smile on my face, &#8220;I created that.&#8221;
<p /> The subject of this endeavor was my unadorned but especially eventful college dormitory: Bruce Hall. I&#8217;ve spent much of my academic life within these white walls. It&#8217;s a special place. And the guys that I live with are my brothers. They aren&#8217;t your button-downed, prince-charming, come-riding-on-a-horse type of guys. But they are my brothers. Wouldn&#8217;t trade them for anyone. I love where I live. Even if your mom doesn&#8217;t approve.</p>

<div>This project was a lot of fun to work on. It was probably my favorite project for my internship as well as the most creative. I got to design a template for a textbook called&nbsp;<i>Business Statistics</i>, for Soomo Publishing, and online textbook publisher. I designed the layout, colors, and graphics completely from scratch, which maximized my creativity. Also, all the content was already provided (and that&#8217;s always nice!).&nbsp;</div>
<p />
<div>I designed this totally in Photoshop CS5, using the 960 Grid System. I designed all buttons and interface graphics myself. I made great use of layer style effects, clipping masks, and layer masks. Because I used many layers in this project, I earned that it is imperative to name and organize layers in to groups and sub-groups.</div>
<p />
<div>I look forward do doing more design projects like this one.&nbsp;</div>
